Jhang, Tuesday, 7 October 2025 — Communities in Jhang were actively engaged through awareness-raising activities and a theatre performance organized by PODA (Potohar Organization for Development Advocacy (PODA), focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and the harmful effects of early marriages.
These activities are part of the ongoing three-year project titled “Reduce Early Marriages to Enhance Gender Equality,” supported by the Norwegian Embassy in Islamabad.
During the sessions, PODA’s Project Officer, Sumera Sattar discussed key issues around menstrual hygiene management (MHM), noting that a lack of open communication between mothers and daughters is a major barrier to awareness. She also highlighted the long-term physical, emotional, and social consequences of early marriage, and emphasized the importance of girls’ education as a pathway to empowerment and improved health outcomes.
Participants—many of whom were married at an early age—openly shared their personal stories and challenges. They expressed a strong commitment to ensuring that their daughters are not subjected to early marriages and are supported in continuing their education.
Social activist Ms. Zarina Sheikh supported these activities by mobilizing the community and delivering powerful messages during the sessions. She urged women to prioritize their reproductive health, seek timely care, and understand the dangers of conditions like anemia—particularly for pregnant women. She also stressed the importance of hydration during menstruation and eating a balanced, nutrient-rich diet.
A community theatre performance was used as a powerful educational tool to highlight the right to education guaranteed under Article 25-A of the Constitution. The play delivered a strong message about delaying marriage so girls can complete their education and lead healthy, empowered lives.
